Starting out in a new sport can be difficult. There is loads of advice out there from friends, surfers and on the internet. not to mention from surf shops. However with all the conflicting information on the right suit or board to buy its not easy to make the right choice. We see so many people who have made the wrong descision especially when it comes to boards, and therefore take a lot longer to improve. We offer a free advice service with no strings attached ( we are not connected to any shop or brand ) although we all have our favourites naturally). Who better to advice you, than the guys who actually see you out in the water and can see what you can do and were you are hoping to progress to. We are also always open to giving you advice on were and when to surf and help you get the best waves possible for you.
Here are a quick few tips. Your size does count with boards but so does your skill level. Just because you are 5'2'' doesnt mean you should be on a little 6'6'board. You need a high skill level and good basic technique to surf this board no matter what height. Dont go small to early: People get to a level then blame the board for a lack of progression. Even with a basic beginner longboard you can catch green waves and do good turns. And you should be able to before buying something much smaller ( or at least keep your big board for messy or small days ). Big boards mean lots of waves and thats what you need when starting out. Surfers are a great source of information but remember just because they are surfing "a long time" in your eyes doesnt mean they are really that good, or that they remember what its like to be a beginner. Friends like to surf and let you tag along, but that might not really be the best place for you. Dont focus on geting "out back" to the big waves to early. You need the skills (poping up, taking of at an angle, reading the wave, gaining speed on your board) to be able to handle those waves otherwise you just get beaten back to the shore and have learned nothing. Try as many boards as you can before you buy. We have a good range you can check out. For suits, size and it fitting you right is much more important than the brand name or colour. Know your surf ettique and use it, especially out the back saying sorry really isnt good enough if you know you could have got out of the way or not taken the wave. If you dont understand this at all see www.isasurf.ie Smile surfing is fun remember.
